VSCF #9: The Monkey Gland
Date: February 26, 2007
Ingredients: Plymouth gin, fresh navel orange juice, Fee Brothers grenadine, Pernod
Notes: This was my first cocktail with pastis. Absinthe being illegal and all in the US, I used Pernod. When I tasted the Pernod for the first time on Saturday, my tongue went numb, which was a bit odd. […]

VSFC #8: East India Cocktail
Date: February 25, 2007
Ingredients: Gautier VS Cognac, Smucker’s raspberry syrup, Angostura bitters, Bols Curacao, Maraska maraschino liqueur (from Croatia!)
Notes: Sweet, really sweet, cloyingly sweet. It has almost an ounce of sweet in it (between the syrup and the liqueur), and no acidifying agent, so it was quite expected. I would put this particular […]

VSFC #7: Tom Collins
Date: Feb 23, 2006
Ingredients: Gordon’s gin, lemon, simple syrup, and Hanson’s club soda
Notes: Another of the easy drinks in VSFC. A bit boring, but tasty. I’m not a big fan of sparkling sours like this, since I just want to suck it down like lemonade. The big flaw in the presentation of […]

VSFC #6: The Algonquin
Date: February 19, 2007
Ingredients: Rittenhouse 100 Bottled in Bond rye, Boissiere dry vermouth, and pineapple juice(recipe)
Notes: This is essentially a Manhattan with pineapple juice, so if you like those you’ll probably like this. (The drink is actually lighter colored than this, but I didn’t have my camera set right when I took the photo.) […]

Waiter, there’s a comb-over in my drink.
After so much waiting, next month I will finally have access in Oregon to the super ultra premium Trump Vodka. For the classy price of $33.95 a bottle, I too can be among the elite with my clear, tasteless bottle of alcohol. Compared to that trash Ketel One at only $22.95, this is the […]

Things I learned in this weekend
Things I learned this weekend, in order of amusement:
If you go away for an overnight trip and only good meal you have comes in a plastic cup, you’re in trouble.
Canola oil is not an acceptable substitute for sugar syrup in an Old-Fashioned, even if they’re both in brown bottles with pour spouts. It is […]

Sort of like a French 35
Does this look like a French 75 to you? The answer is no. This was almost VSFC #6. Almost. Let’s list what I did wrong:
I forgot to strain gin/lemon mixture, so there was pulp floating in it. That doesn’t work so well in a fizzy drink.
An obvious omission on Ted’s […]

Women, Fire, and Dangerous Things
Rather than the usual syrupy Valentine’s Day note, I will reveal something about real love I have discovered. If you’re married, or thinking of getting married, don’t expect a spouse who’s afraid of sharp things and hot things to magically pick up an interest in cooking. And certainly, certainly, don’t hold a grudge against […]

Sons of Baracktail
I can yammer on about cocktails all I want, but it’s not until one of The Wife’s little online knit-blogger people posts about a cocktail that she’s all like “ooh, ooh, make that”. In this case, it was The Blinker. Last week, I wrote about The Baracktail. ( Curiously, the Obama ‘08 […]

The First Egg of the Season
This afternoon, I went out to feed and water our chicken, and look what I found:
The first egg of the season. How magical. While it’s not as “early” as these eggs, the first egg means the days are getting longer and winter is one it’s way out. I can’t wait for breakfast […]
